Background

The Tyndarian 24th Light Infantry and Reconnaissance is a regiment of the Imperial Guard, the heroes of a science fiction novel set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. It is an unofficial novel and is currently still in the works.

Overview

The Tyndarian 24th Light Infantry and Reconnaissance is an average sized regiment in the Imperial Guard of the Imperium of Mankind. Known as the 'Nighthawks' due to their stealth tactics and skills, they are excellent scouts and often times find themselves in hit and run missions. They come from the planet of Tyndaria, in the Sabbat Worlds.

Commanded by Colonel Tythos Karrack, they are a young force. One thing that makes the Nighthawks different from the average regiment is that it is a mixed regiment of men and women. More traditional commanders raise an eyebrow to this, especially to the officers that are female.

Besides Karrack, notable men and women in the regiment are: Major Traviss, the second in command, Platoon leader and regimental flag bearer Lieutenant Travot Draf, Platoon leader Lieutenant Kira Mors, and Platoon leader Sergeant Carneth Obelitz.

Equipment

As the recon role would suggest, the Nighthawks are not heavily armed or armoured. They give up heavy gear and weapons in favour of stealth and speed. Most use the standard issue Mark IV Long Pattern Las Rifle. Each platoon also has two Mark VII Grenade launchers, capable of launching Fragmentation grenades, and a platoon sniper with a Long-las sniper rifle, which is basically a modified lasrifle. Every member has a standard issue of four fragmentation grenades, and officers often times have a bolt pistol and power sword.

The armour is a standard suit of Flak Armour, covering the torso and shoulders of the soldier wearing it. Helmets are rarely seen as they prefer to where a Beret like hat. The combat fatigues are made from special Cameleoline material that changes colour with the environment. This aids in stealth, and the comabt armour is jet black. With these two pieces of gear at their disposal, the Nighthawks are able to move with increased chances of invisibility, especially at night.

In addition to the special weapons, platoons generally have either a Heavy Bolter machine gun, or a 50 cal. Autocannon for heavy weapon support. These are chosen because of their mobility and light weight, and ability to lay down covering fire. The autocannons are able to knock out light vehicles, such as A.P.C.'s and halftracks. Mortars can be found in a few platoons, but the heavy weapons stop there.

Organization

Being scouts, the Nighthawks are all infantry. The only exception is that there are a few dozen Sentinel scout walkers for close infantry support and scouting for armoured regiments. These are even more lightly armed and armoured than most sentinel walkers for faster and quieter movement.

The Regiment follows the standard platoon organization of most regiments. A full strength platoon is sixty troopers strong, making five squads of ten men/women each, a platoon sergeant and a chosen squad of six troopers with a voxcastor com set, a heavy weapon team, and finally a platoon sniper.

Who are the Tyndarians?

The Nighthawks come from the agri (Agricultural) world of Tyndaria. It is a rather small world with rolling plains and mostly farmland of the local crops. There are plenty of forests and a few substantial seas, as well as the occasional mountain range. Tyndaria lies near the border of the Sabbat Worlds, the region of the Segmentum Pacificus that Saint Sabbat conquered in the name of The Holy Emperor of Terra.

This world with its forests and mountains, though few and small, have allowed the people of Tyndaria to develop a natural sense of stealth and sabotage. The first Tyndarians that were put in the Imperial Guard were scouts in small numbers in otherwise non stealth regiments. In time, the usefulness of full light infantry regiments was seen and so the first regiments were made. Although very few, the larger cities do contain factories where small armoured regiments have been raised. These are usually mechanized versions of the regular infantry with Chimera transports, Salamander scout or command vehicles, Sentinel Scout walkers, and Basilisk mobile artillery platforms.

Colonized shortly after Saint Sabbat conquered the region named after her, it is not one of the planets that was taken by her. After the conquest of the region, older Imperial Guard units began to disband after being in the service for decades. The traditional way for older units to disband is to take a prize world, or a currently uninhabited planet. Dozens of men and women from multiple regiments made the empty planet their home. It is unknown where the name "Tyndaria" comes from, perhaps from a leader of one of those regiments. Regardless, it grew over time, the former bringers of death becoming bringers of life as farmers and parents.
