U.S. Route 62
Encyclopedia : U : US : USR : U.S. Route 62
U.S. Route 62 runs from the United States-Canada border at Niagara Falls, New York all the way to the US-Mexico border at El Paso, Texas.
Parts of U.S. 62 follow what once was the Ozark Trail [link], including the historic bridge across the South Canadian River in Newcastle, Oklahoma (the first structure built with federal highway funds in Oklahoma).
States traversed
The highway passes through the following states:
U.S. Route 62 runs with U.S. Highway 71 from Fayetteville to Rogers, U.S. Highway 412 from Alpena to Imboden, U.S. Highway 63 from Hardy to Imboden, U.S. Highway 65 from Bear Creek Springs to south of Harrison, and U.S. Highway 67 from Pocahontas to Corning.
U.S. Route 62 is multiplexed with U.S. Route 60 for its entire length (which is less than a mile (1.6 km)) in Illinois. It crosses Illinois at its very southern tip between the Mississippi and Ohio rivers.
At the Ohio/Pennsylvania state line, signage for U.S. 62 changes from an east-west to north-south. U.S. 62 also runs north-northeast from the Ohio border towards New York.
The northern terminus for US 62 and its parallel route, US 62A is at New York State Route 104 on the east side of Niagara Falls. Both routes converge in the eastern part of the city before intersecting Interstate 190 and New York State Route 265. The highway turns to the southeast and intersects New York State Route 425, before crossing the Erie Canal and exiting Niagara County and entering Erie County. Turning southward, US 62 intersects Interstate 290 and passes through Buffalo and continues southward through Lackawanna.
Passing the New York State Thruway (Interstate 90), US 62 turns southwest at the Hamburg, but then assumes a more southerly direction as it passes through the Gowanda, crossing Cattaraugus Creek to leave Erie County and to enter Cattaraugus County. Following a southwesterly course, US 62 enters Chautauqua County, where it intersects with Interstate 86 (Southern Tier Expressway). US 62 leaves New York for Pennsylvania south of Frewsburg.
While most of the route is an east-west route, for unknown reasons, U.S. 62 runs north-south in Pennsylvania and New York.

Trivia
- US 62 is the only even-numbered US Highway to have termini at the Canadian and Mexican borders.
- As a result of US 62 crossing the Ohio River between Illinois and Kentucky multiplexed with US 51 and US 60, and crossing the Mississippi River between Illinois and Missouri multiplexed with US 60, rather than crossing the Mississippi River directly from Kentucky to Missouri, Kentucky and Missouri are the only two states of the contiguous forty-eight to share a boundary with no road directly connecting the two states.
