The UH-72A is a proposed Utility Helicopter for the US Army, to be made by EADS North America. The Army selected EADS' EC-145 as the winner of its LUH (Light Utility Helicopter) programme. They intent to buy a total of 322 aircraft, with a possible surplus order of another 20. The programme has a potential value of about US $3 billion. Initial deliveries of the aircraft are expected to commence in November 2006, with a US Army designation of UH-72A. All aircraft are expected to be delivered by June 30th, 2016.
Role
The helicopter is designed to take on a range of missions, from general support and medical evacuation (medevac) to personnel recovery and counter-narcotics operations. They are planned to replace current generation US utility helicopters, such as the UH-1, UH-60, and some ANG OH-58 aircraft.This is designed to free up these aircraft from domestic duties and allow them to be used in operational combat units.
