USS Black Hawk

There have been four naval vessels named USS Black Hawk, named after the Saux-Fox War Chief (Makataimeshekiakiak) who lead a small party of his tribe from Iowa to his native Illinois. This action ensued the Black Hawk War (1832), which helped make names of Zachary Taylor, Jefferson Davis and included a captain in the Illinois militia, Abraham Lincoln.
The four ships are:
- USS Black Hawk, Tinclad Gunboat (1848-66); Built in 1848 as the steamboat New Uncle Sam, sold to US Navy in 1862 and and commissioned USS Uncle Sam; renamed Black Hawk about a month later; acted a flagship of the Mississippi Squadron under Admirals David Dixon Porter and Samuel P. Lee ; burned near Cairo, Illinois in April, 1866.
- USS Black Hawk, Passenger Liner (1904-1927); Oringanally the Rhaetia, flying under the flag of Imperial Germany, seized by US Army in 1917 and rename Black Hawk, used a cargo transport; Turned over to US Navy in 1919 and commissioned as the Black Arrow; shortly thereafter was turned over to the US Shipping Board; Scrapped in 1924.
- USS Black Hawk (AD-9), Black Hawk Class Destroyer Tender (1913-1947); Flagship of the Atlantic Destroyer Tender until shortly before World War II; served in various theaters of operations; earned one battle star.
- USS Black Hawk (MHC-55), Osprey Class Minehunter Costal; Reservist vessel with the USS John F. Kennedy Battlegroup; First of her class to find and destroy a mine; partook the Mississippi River Cruise in 2000 to showcase the vessel, visiting such ports as New Orleans, Vicksburg, Memphis, Cape Girardeau and St. Louis.
