In the Star Trek universe, the USS Defiant (NCC-1764) was one of the original 12 Federation Constitution-class starships. The Defiant was seen in the episode "The Tholian Web" and in the episode "In a Mirror, Darkly"
The Regular Universe
In the episode "The Tholian Web", taking place in 2268, Starfleet lost contact with Defiant. The Enterprise (NCC-1701) found her on the border of Tholian space. She was drifting in and out of sensor contact when found. Captain Kirk and a boarding party found the crew dead; they had all gone insane and killed each other. While aboard Defiant, the crew found the ship was starting to disappear. The transporters on the Enterprise weren't working at 100%, Kirk remained behind while the rest of the crew beamed back. Defiant then disappeared with Kirk on board. The crew was soon confronted by the Tholian Commander, Loskene, on the grounds that the Federation violated Tholian space.
The Tholians soon began building their signature energy web around Enterprise. Science officer Spock soon found that the entire area was littered with areas of interphase between universes. Doctor McCoy discovered that the interphase caused a biochemical imbalance, which caused Defiant's crew to go mad. He was able to synthesize medication to counteract the effects of the interphase. Enterprise was able to use the interphase to escape, and recover Captain Kirk. As far as the regular universe Federation knew, Defiant was presumed destroyed while in interphase.
The Mirror Universe
In the episode "In a Mirror, Darkly" the actual fate of the Defiant was revealed. The Tholians of the Mirror universe had detonated a tri-cobalt device inside a dead star, which caused a tear, or interphase, in between the regular and Mirror Universe. Unable to send their own vessels through, they sent a distress call in the hopes of catching a ship from the 'normal' Trek universe over to the Mirror universe so they could capture the ship and use it for an invasion. The Mirror Tholians planted a false distress signal, which the Defiant answered before becoming trapped in interphase. The Tholian's gamble paid off when the Defiant became caught in the interphase. Eventually the ship slipped through interphase, and not only was it transported to the Mirror Universe, but it had been transported 113 years into the past to 2155. Soon the Mirror Universe's Jonathan Archer learned of the Defiant, and he was able to force the mirror universe's counterpart of Maxwell Forrest and the I.S.S. Enterprise (NX-01) to go on a mission to investigate the appearance of the Defiant.
Upon arriving at the dock holding the Defiant, Forrest ordered Archer to board the ship, download what information they could, and destroy the ship. While the Enterprise boarding party was on the Defiant, the Enterprise was attacked by the Tholians and destroyed. Most of the Enterprise crew was able to leave via escape pods. Archer and his boarding party reactivated the Defiant. The Defiant was then able to escape from the dock in which it was being held, and recover the escape pods.
Archer then took the ship back to Earth, with the intent of overthrowing the current Emperor. Shortly before reaching Earth, Archer was poisoned by the mirror universe counterpart of Hoshi Sato, who used the advanced technology found on the Defiant to have herself installed as Empress Sato.
Non-Canon appearances of the Defiant
Novels
In the Lost Era book The Sundered the USS Excelsior briefly sees Defiant while involved in a dangerous situation in Tholian space in 2298. Excelsior is unable to attempt a rescue and Defiant quickly vanishes. The story of the Defiant is continued in the SCE (Starfleet Corp of Engineers) E-Books Interphase books one and two. In 2376, Defiant reappears in Tholian space. Starfleet dispatches USS da Vinci to retrieve her. A crew beams aboard with a supply of Theragen to make them immune to the effects of Interphase. The crew learns Defiant had discovered the Tholians attacked a Klingon colony and was attacked by the Tholians to prevent this information from reaching the Klingons. Since even 100 years later this news could prove damaging, the Tholians attack da Vinci and Defiant, forcing the latter into Interphase with several members of the da Vinci's crew on board.
DC Comics
In the "Lost Era" DC Comics story line, Kirk and USS Enterprise-A are sent to retrieve the USS Defiant from Interphase. It is revealed that Defiant had an experimental phasing cloak that caused her to slip into interphase. A further development of the cloak allows Enterprise to slip between universes and go to the pocket universe holding Defiant. Defiant is successfully tractored out.
