United States Navy
Eight ships in the United States Navy have carried the name Enterprise. The prefix USS (for United States Ship) was not used until the late 1790s[link], and until 1907 was only one of a number of prefixes used. Since 1907 the prefix has been used for all commissioned (and only for commissioned) ships of the U.S. Navy. In common usage, ship name prefixes are often applied retroactively to ships of the line that would have had said prefix under current practice.
- USS Enterprise (1775-05-18 – 1777-07-07), the first ship to bear this name, was originally the uncommissioned British sloop George, captured by American forces in the Revolutionary War. Rechristened Enterprise, she served on Lake Champlain. — [Navy File]
- Enterprise (1776-12-20 – 1777 February), the second ship to bear this name, was a successful privateer before she was purchased for the Continental Navy. Commanded by Captain Joseph Campbell, the schooner Enterprise operated principally in Chesapeake Bay. She convoyed transports, carried out reconnaissance, and guarded the shores against foraging raids by the British. Only meager records of her service have been found; they indicate that she was apparently returned to the Maryland Council of Safety. — [Navy File]
- Due to the concurrent service of the first Enterprise, this second ship would not have been commissioned under current practice, and would not carry the USS prefix.
- USS Enterprise (1799-12-17 – 1823-07-09), the third ship to bear this name, was a schooner, and fired the first shots in the First Barbary War against the Tripolitain ship Tripoli. — [Navy File]
- USS Enterprise (1831-12-15 – 1844-06-24), the fourth ship to bear this name, was also a schooner. — [Navy File]
- USS Enterprise (1877-03-16 – 1909-10-01), the fifth ship to bear this name, was a screw sloop. — [Navy File] [& Pictures]
- This might be the first Enterprise to carry the USS prefix while in actual service.
- Enterprise (SP-790) (1917 – 1919), the sixth ship to bear this name, was a non-commissioned motor yacht serving in the Second Naval District during World War I. — [Navy File]
- USS Enterprise (CV-6) (1938-05-12 – 1947-02-17), the seventh ship to bear this name, was an aircraft carrier and the most-decorated U.S. Navy vessel of World War II. — [Navy File] [& Pictures]
- USS Enterprise (CVN-65) (1961-11-25 – Present), the eighth ship to bear this name, was the world’s first nuclear aircraft carrier. — [Navy File A,] [B,] [C,] [D,] [E,] [F,]
This Enterprise is set to be decomissioned in 2013, and as a result there is a growing movement to name one of the CVN-21 class carriers (preferably CVN-78) Enterprise.
NASA
- Enterprise (OV-101), the first Space Shuttle Orbiter, was used for flight and landing tests. She was rolled out of Rockwell International's Plant 42, Site 1 Palmdale, California assembly facility on 1976-09-17.
- NASA does not use the USS prefix for the shuttles.
