The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E) is a Sovereign class starship in the Star Trek fictional universe. It is the sixth ship to carry the name Enterprise, and one of at least two starships so named in the late 24th century. It is the primary setting for three films starring the cast of the series ' – ', ', and (with numerous modifications) '.
Also known as the Enterprise-E to distinguish it from its predecessors, this vessel was launched on stardate 49827.5 (2372) from San Francisco Fleet Yards under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, a year after the events of ' and the destruction of the Enterprise-D, and a year before the events of ' and the Battle of Sector 001.
In 2373 the Borg attacked Earth leading to the Battle of Sector 001, which was seemingly ended with the arrival of the Enterprise and its commander Captain Jean-Luc Picard. When the invading Borg Cube was destroyed, it launched an auxiliary ship which travelled back in time to prevent Zefram Cochrane's historic warp flight. The Enterprise followed it and in the ensuing conflict was partially assimilated. Their mission, of course, was successful, and the ship was quickly repaired.
In 2375, as depicted in , the Enterprise-E prevented an attempted relocation of the Ba'ku people from their homeworld in the Briar Patch (an unstable region of space full of nebulas, gas clouds, plasma fields, and unusual space anomalies) of Federation space by the Son'a, an offshoot of the Ba'ku that left the homeworld a century earlier.
Four years later the Enterprise-E (slightly modified) was featured in , when a renegade clone of Jean-Luc Picard took control of the Romulan Star Empire and threatened the destruction of Earth. During this mission, the Enterprise-E was severely damaged, including having its bridge exposed to space and part of its primary hull destroyed because of a collision with Shinzon's vessel, the Scimitar. This required the vessel to undergo extensive repairs afterwards.
Because this Enterprise was launched and commissioned so quickly following the events of and the destruction of the Enterprise-D, some fans speculate that this ship was originally a different vessel which was hastily renamed Enterprise while still under construction. However, this remains unconfirmed by any canon Star Trek film or show. According to the licensed (but non-canon) novels based upon Star Trek, original Enterprise engineer Montgomery Scott helped design the vessel. Though this has not been suggested on screen, it is possible as Scotty was alive until at least 2369 (Relics).
According to designer John Eaves, the Enterprise-E is capable of Saucer separation by his design. Although many sources claim that the ship is incapable of this due to the fact it has not yet been depicted, Eaves did indeed include Saucer Separation in the blueprint for the ship. [link]
