Uganda National Liberation Army
Encyclopedia : U : UG : UGA : Uganda National Liberation Army
The Uganda National Liberation Army (UNLA) was the military arm of the Uganda National Liberation Front (UNLF), which was formed by exiled Ugandans in the late 1970s. The UNLA fought alongside the Tanzania People's Defence Force (TPDF) in the Uganda-Tanzania War to topple the regime of Idi Amin. (See Uganda under Amin)
After the overthrow of Amin on 11 April 1979, the UNLA became the national army of Uganda until it was defeated on 25 January 1986 by the guerrillas of the National Resistance Army (NRA) led by Yoweri Museveni. Many UNLA soldiers formed rebel groups to fight the new government, such as the Uganda People's Democratic Army, that were ultimately unsuccessful.
