Captain "Ugly" John Black was a character in the M*A*S*H novel, movie, and television series. He was portrayed by Carl Gottlieb in the movie, and John Orchard in the TV series. The character was an anaesthesiologist from Australia with an Australian accent. It was unclear whether he was a naturalized American citizen and US Army officer, or he was an Australian military officer serving with the 4077th. In the book, he was an American who had "trained in the States with McIntyre".

In the TV series, Ugly John was only present in the first season. He began as a significant supporting member of the cast, but by the end of the season he was rarely seen and little more than a minor character seen only in the background played by an extra. In the movie, he was a minor supporting character.
