Ukraine's glory has not perished
Encyclopedia : U : UK : UKR : Ukraine's glory has not perished
"Ukraine's glory has not perished" (Ukrainian: Ще не вмерла України or Shche ne vmerla Ukrainy) is the national anthem of Ukraine. The music was composed in 1863 by Mykhaylo Verbytsky, a western Ukrainian composer and Catholic priest intended to accompany a patriotic poem written in 1862 [link] by Pavlo Chubynsky, a prominent ethnographer in the Kyiv region. Widely sung around the country, the lyrics were somewhat similar to those of Polish, Serbian and Israeli anthems.
In 1917, it became the anthem of the short-lived Ukrainian People's Republic.
Shche ne vmerla Ukraina was sung as the de facto national anthem at the inauguration of the first President Leonid Kravchuk on December 5, 1991.
Article 20 of the Constitution of Ukraine (June 28, 1996) designates Verbytsky's music as the theme of the national anthem: The State Anthem of Ukraine is the national anthem set to the music of M. Verbytskyi, with words that are confirmed by the law adopted by no less than two-thirds of the constitutional composition of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
On March 6, 2003, the parliament adopted the following lyrics, which are slightly modified from Chubynsky's original words.

Ukraine's glory hasn't perished, nor her freedom
Upon us, fellow compatriots, fate shall smile once more.
Our enemies will vanish, like dew in the morning sun,
And we too shall rule, brothers, in a free land of our own.
CHORUS(twice)
We'll lay down our souls and bodies to attain our freedom,
And we'll show that we, brothers, are of the Cossack nation.

Ukrainian words (pre-2003)
Ще не вмерла України, ні слава, ні воля,
Ще нам, браття-українці, усміхнеться доля.

Заживемо і ми, браття, у своїй сторонці.
CHORUS
CHORUS
А завзятта праця щира свого ще докаже,
Ще ся волі в Україні піснь гучна розляже.
За Карпати відібється, згомонить степами,
України слава стане поміж народами.

English translation (pre-2003)
Ukraine has not perished, neither her glory, nor freedom,
Upon us, fellow--Ukrainians, fate shall smile once more.
Our enemies will vanish, like dew in the morning sun,
And we too shall dwell, brothers, in a free land of our own.
CHORUS
We'll lay down our souls and bodies to attain our freedom,
And we'll show that we, brothers, are of the Kozak nation.
(repeat chorus)
We'll stand together for freedom, from the San to the Don,
We will not allow others to rule in our motherland.
The Black Sea will smile and grandfather Dnipro will rejoice,
For in our own Ukraine fortune shall flourish again.
CHORUS
Our persistence and our sincere toils will be rewarded,
And freedom's song will resound throughout all of Ukraine.
Echoing off the Carpathians, and rumbling across the steppes,
Ukraine's fame and glory will be known among all nations.
