Ukrainian diaspora
Encyclopedia : U : UK : UKR : Ukrainian diaspora
The term Ukrainian diaspora refers to the global community of ethnic Ukrainians, usually more specifically those who maintain some kind of connection, even if ephemeral, to the land of their ancestors and maintain their feeling of Ukrainian national identity within local community.
In the immediate post-Second World War period the largest Ukrainian communities in the emigration were to be found in Canada, the USA, United Kingdom and Australia. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union a significant outmigration of Ukrainians has taken place, perhaps as many as 7-8 million people moving largely into western Europe as seasonal labourers, students and illegal migrants, the latter sometimes being exploited by criminal gangs. The Ukrainian Diaspora is nominally organized by the World Ukrainian Congress although, in reality, most Ukrainians in the Diaspora are represented by national bodies, which themselves vary in their importance and activism.
