While it is one of the most expensive Zerg units, it is also the most powerful, mostly in terms of sheer mass and endurance. With a base 1 armor and 400 hit points, and 6 armor when upgraded, the Ultralisk is one of the toughest enemies to kill when upgraded. The "Chitinous Plating" upgrade included with Brood War gives Ultralisks an extra 2 armor points, making it even tougher. Its melee attack can only hurt land units immediately adjacent to the Ultralisk, and it doles out a mediocre 20 damage per hit -- comparable to the Protoss Dragoon, which can be built for a fraction of the price of an Ultralisk. Also, due to its large size and short range few Ultralisk can attack a single target at once.
The Ultralisk is fast, especially after its speed is upgraded (Brood War only). It also has the distinction of being one of the few Zerg ground units that are unable to burrow underground, presumably because of its massive girth and thick carapace. (Broodlings and some heroic Zerg ground units also cannot burrow.) Unlike other Zerg units, Ultralisks take a substantial of "Control" to produce: 4 supply per Ultralisk, meaning that an overlord can only supply 2 ultralisk, as opposed to 8 Hydralisk or 16 Zerglings.
The Ultralisk is armed with a pair of "Kaiser Blades", which are nearly indestructible and have a monomolecular edge.
Ultralisks can only be produced after the player morphs an Ultralisk Cavern. They have special upgrades available in which enhance their speed and armor, in addition to the typical armor upgrades available to all Zerg units. These special modifications came about due to direct exposure to raw Vespene gas.
The Ultralisk was first observed by Terran forces when a small number destroyed a Terran Confederacy outpost on Timul IV.
The Tiamat Brood and the lesser Leviathan Brood appear to control the majority of these creatures, as most Torrasques seen sport the appropriate corresponding brood colors (red and yellow respectively).
When a former Alpha Squadron commander teamed up with Mojo, a Protoss Praetor, to attack Schezar
s Scavengers, they were attacked by a strangely powerful Ultralisk. Mojo feared it was the Torrasque, a creature which had slain many Protoss.
It rampaged through their base before it was finally brought down by sustained offensive fire. The Terrans were surprised when it spontaneously regenerated after a few minutes.
A former Alpha Squadron advisor, Magellan, noted that it had a genetic signature very similar to that of the Cerebrate. Mojo theorized that slaying the Cerebrate would prevent the resurrection of the Torrasque. It was possible to kill the Cerebrate since the Zerg Overmind was dead, so the Cerebrate itself could not be resurrected.
One was surrounded by Ultralisk caverns, and could create the powerful Torrasque. Once again, the Cerebrate could resurrect the Torrasque upon its death. The Psi Disruptor, however, prevented the Zerg Overmind from resurrecting its Cerebrates. With great effort, the UED forces repeatedly slew the Torrasque before destroying the Cerebrate.
Jim Raynor disabled the Disruptor by destroying its fusion reactors, and then Mengsk sent down a SCV, carrying a psi-emitter, to lure nearby Zerg. These Zerg would then fall under the command of Infested Kerrigan. The SCV encountered a Torrasque, which was added to Kerrigan's forces.

Origin
The Ultralisk is descended from the peaceful Brontolith. The current Ultralisk bears little resemblance to the original creature. An Ultralisk is about 20 meters long (the size of a city bus), according to StarCraft Adventures. The Torrasque
The Torrasque is an especially powerful strain of Ultralisk. The Torrasque has double the hit points and does over twice as much damage as a typical Ultralisk. The name is derived from the Tarrasque, a fearsome dragon, somewhat akin to a manticore, in French folklore. The Torrasque is present in some campaign missions but is absent in official multiplayer games (with the exception of several fan made maps). Torrasques also have a tendency to get resurrected by their respective Cerebrates upon their death. Enslavers
