Umino Iruka

Umino Iruka (ordered Iruka Umino in the English anime) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Naruto. Background Umino Iruka is an instructor at the ninja academy. Introduced as Uzumaki Naruto's sensei, he and Naruto have a special connection. Iruka sees himself in Naruto because he also grew up as an orphan and was around Naruto's current age when his parents were killed by the Kyūbi; Naruto cares for him because Iruka was the first person to acknowledge him as a person of value and show concern for him. Naruto also sees Iruka as a father figure. Even though Iruka's parents were killed by the demon sealed inside Naruto, Iruka doesn't blame Naruto for what happened because he knows Naruto is an independent person from the nine tailed fox. Iruka regrets not being there more for Naruto so he tends to be a little over protective. Often worrying that Naruto is being pushed too hard, Iruka tends to underestimate Naruto's ability and determination during the many trials he goes through to become a great ninja. He was also Konohamaru's teacher at the ninja academy after Naruto graduates. Little is known about Iruka's Ninjutsu, it is assumed he is a ninja of some skill according to his Chūnin rank and his appointment as teacher of the academy. It is assumed that Iruka is highly competent at Trap Ninjutsu as shown by his Fuubaku Houjin used against Mizuki. During the Third Hokage's funeral, Naruto asks Iruka why people sacrifice themselves for others. Iruka tells him that all people are connected by a special line that can never be cut. He says that line is the love between all people. And as the time passes that line gets longer and thicker. Naruto tells him he understands, somewhat. Naruto II In the Naruto II Arc, he basically looks the same, and he still has the same ranking. It is revealed that he is still a teacher at the academy. It is unknown if he will eventually advance to the level of Jōnin. Some fans speculate that he and Naruto will challenge each other at one point to become a Jōnin; it would fit the recurring theme of the student surpassing the teacher. Trivia The name "Umino Iruka" can be taken as "umi no iruka" ("sea dolphin"). According to the official databook, Iruka's favorite food is the same as Naruto's, Ramen (in particular, ramen from Ichiraku Ramen Bar); his least favorite food is Maze-gohan (rice with steamed vegetables). His hobby is going to the hot springs and his favorite phrase is "Faith". It is interesting to note that even though he doesn't appear very often in the anime and manga, Iruka is constantly in the Top 10 favorite character polls, usually in the 4th - 5th spot. This is most likely due to the impact he has had in Naruto's life (being that of a father figure to Naruto). Iruka gets a game-exclusive move in . He sends his opponent flying into the air, jumps up and punches them to the ground, pins them down with a large shuriken, and finishes using a spinning drill kick. Iruka is the first known victim of the Sexy Jutsu, in which Naruto transforms into a unclothed female version of himself for the purpose of being a prank and a distraction towards men. According to the English Anime Profile book (Episodes 1-37), the mark above Iruka's nose is indeed a scar.
