Ungheni (population: 43,000) is the seventh largest town in Moldova and since 2003, the seat of Raionul Ungheni.

The first documentary attestation of Ungheni is dated to 20 August 1462.

A bridge across the Prut and a border checkpoint to Romania exists in this town. There is another border town with the same name in Romania, on the other side of the Prut River.
