Uni Records

Encyclopedia : U : UN : UNI : Uni Records

Uni Records, short for Universal City Records, was a subsidiary of MCA Records. It was established in 1968, but its UNi logo was retired (along with two other MCA subsidiaries, Kapp Records and Decca Records) in 1972, with all Decca, Uni and Kapp artists, back catalog and new releases being moved directly to the MCA label.

In 1988, Uni was revived by MCA Records as a niche label, with Eric B. & Rakim, Swans, and Steve Earle the initial artists on the roster. They ended up the only artists on the label, as Uni and its artists (except for Swans, who were dropped) was folded back into MCA at the end of 1989.

Uni was also the name of MCA's music distribution network. In the wake of Seagram's purchase of MCA in 1996, Uni Distribution Corp. was renamed Universal Music & Video Distribution, Inc
