Uniate Cathedral (Przemyśl)
Encyclopedia : U : UN : UNI : Uniate Cathedral (Przemyśl)
The Uniate Cathedral of Przemyśl was build in the 17th century as a Jesuit church. It is located at the Ulica Katedralna in Przemyśl, in souther Poland.
In 1991, the church was subject of national attention, when the roman catholic clergy (with admission from the pope) decided to donate the building, then a Jesuit church, to the Greek Catholic population in Przemyśl. The Greek catholics didn't have a place to worship since the end of the Second World War in 1945, when the Carmelite Church was given back to the Carmelites by the new government.
After this decision, roman catholic churchgoers blockaded the entrance for the greek catholics. It took several weeks of negotiation for the roman catholics to give in, after fierce debates and negotiations.
