Unibar (Wollongong)

Encyclopedia : U : UN : UNI : Unibar (Wollongong)

The Unibar is the slightly unimaginative name of the University of Wollongong bar. As well as providing students with food and drinks, it plays host to arguably the most professional and competitive lunchtime activity on campus, Tuesday Lunchtime Trivia.

The Unibar also boasts a high calibre of entertainment, having played host to many Australian music acts, such as Machine Gun Fellatio, Missy Higgins, Ben Lee, The Superjesus, and soloist Alex Lloyd.

The construction of the new UniBar allowed for more floor space, as well as an increase in windows which created a greater amount of light in the Bar itself - and created dramatic views of Mt Keira across the DuckPond Lawn. Consisting of a wooden floor, and a carpeted lounge, the Unibar is an area where many students are able to share lunch, talk with friends, and listen to contemporary and popular music supplied via three TVs, placed intermittently at strategic points around the bar.

A lower area to the bar holds more seating room, as well as a sizeable stage. To the far right of the bar, three pool tables are situated, each covered in felt of three different colours (from lowest to highest, blue, red and orange).

An external pavilion is also situated to the far left of the bar, consisting of a wooden veranda surrounded by lush vegetation in an open and airy atmosphere.

The central feature of the Unibar is the servery, from which food and drink (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) is supplied. The Unibar features disabled access with ramps positioned at many points around and inside the bar itself.

Design and Construction

The UniBar sits on the Eastern edge of the duckpond lawn. The Sydney based Brewster Hjorth Architects designed the UniBar to face the Duckpond Lawn in a response to student and staff consultation and as a nod to the central part the duckpond lawn plays in campus life. The UniBar buidling was openned by Colin Markham MP, Simon Zulian Student Rep, Nigel Pennington UniCentre GM and Gerard Sutton VC on 14 May 2001. The UniBar has since won numerous awards including the Major Award and the Public Building Award of the Architectural Design Awards held in Wollongong in 2003, the ACUMA award for Best New Campus Facility and the Master Builders Award for Excellence in Construction by Camarda and Cantril.
