Future and recent events

Preparations are under way for 2006.

Snowboardcross will be on the Olympic program for the first time. This fast-paced downhill free-for-all features snowboarders racing pack-style down the same course negotiating through varied terrain and obstacles such as whoops, waves, banks, spines, and kickers. Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton Mountain, Vt.) has been nearly unbeatable in this event for the past three years.

History

Tom Burke was the first athlete to represent the United States at the Olympics. He won gold in both the 100 metres and the 400 metres of the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

The United States has hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics four times.

In 1904, St. Louis, Missouri hosted the World's Fair and the Olympic Games, making the United States the first English-speaking country to host the Olympics. Los Angeles, California has twice played host to the summer Olympic Games: in 1932 and in 1984. Atlanta, Georgia was the host city for the Centennial 1996 Summer Olympics. Centennial Olympic Park was built for 1996 Summer Olympics.
