United Team of Germany

Encyclopedia : U : UN : UNI : United Team of Germany

Athletes from the German Democratic Republic (DDR) and the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik) competed together as the United Team of Germany in the 1956, 1960, and 1964 Winter and Summer Olympics.[#endnote_before-and-after] The United Team's IOC code was EUA (from the official French-language IOC designation, Equipe Unifiée Allemande), and the team used a flag similar to the black-red-gold German flag but with Olympic rings in white placed upon the red middle stripe.

Historical note

  1.   The two countries had fielded separate teams for the 1952 Winter Olympics, the nation's first Olympic Games following the Second World War, and only West German athletes took part in the 1952 Summer Olympics. After the 1956–1964 United Team period, German athletes returned to competing as separate DDR and Bundesrepublik teams (using the IOC codes GDR and FRG, respectively), starting with the 1968 Winter Olympics. This was a consequence of the Ostpolitik policy of Chancellor Willy Brandt and others. The Bundesrepublik's recognition of the DDR was cemented when the DDR football team was (controversially) hosted by the Bundesrepublik in the 1974 FIFA World Cup. This arrangement continued until the German Reunification in 1990.
