Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is a Malaysian university located in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia and was established on November 24 1994. His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong proclaimed the establishment of UMS under Section 6(1) of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971. The institution is Malaysian ninth university.
Initially, the university management office operated at Malaysian Ministry of Education in Kuala Lumpur. It only shifted to Kota Kinabalu in 1995 by renting buildings to cater to its needs.
In August of the same year, physical development began to take place on a 999-acre (4 km²) land. The construction of its campus only finished in 2000.
UMS opened a branch in Labuan in 1999, known as Kampus Antarabangsa Labuan (Labuan International Campus).
Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Dato' Seri (Dr.) Yeoh Tiong Lay, Group Executive Chairman of YTL Corporation Berhad was the Pro-Chancellor of UMS.
Prof. Datuk Mohd. Noh Dalimin is the current Vice Cansellor in UMS.
Assc.Prof Dr Amran Ahmed is given the mandate to be the Deputy Vice Cansellor.
Student representative Council is the ultimate legislative body among the student.A general election is held every years to elect representatives to the student representative Council. Members of the student representative Council, like those of the House of Lords in the United Kingdom, are appointed. They are commonly referred to as MPs or YB.
In 2004/2005, Mohd Fadzli bin Patman was the President of student representative Council. Ali Andrea Hashim, Lee Seang Hock, Foo Soo Ling, Amir Shah Noor Ahmad, Salbiah Baco, Ronny Jimmy, Lim Ching Hao, Zainal Andi Sikandar, Yap Chong Jin, Raj Akbar Sabu, Toh Seong Thye, Kumar A/L Veerasamy, Kong Yee Teng, Palanivel Janarthanan, Wong Lih Yen, Safwan, Chow Pei Yee, Linda Tey Hai Ling, Noor Syalihah and Khor Foo Kiang was the board of director in the student representative Council.
