Encyclopedia : U : UN : UNI : University (Birmingham) railway station
University railway station is a railway station serving Birmingham University in the West Midlands. It is situated on the Redditch-Birmingham New Street-Lichfield "Cross-City" line. Along with Five Ways railway station University was built in 1978 as part of the upgrade on the Cross-City line. Although this was the first station on the site, it is located a short distance away from the former Somerset Road Station, which was closed in the 1930s because of poor patronage.
The station is served by Central Trains with both local "Cross-City" services, operated by Class 323 electrical multiple units, and longer-distance Cardiff-Nottingham services operated by modern Turbostar diesel multiple units.
The station is the only main line railway station in Great Britain built specifically to serve a university. It also serves the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
