University of Johannesburg

Encyclopedia : U : UN : UNI : University of Johannesburg

The University of Johannesburg came into existence on 1 January 2005 as the result of a merger between the former campuses of the Rand Afrikaans University, Technikon Witwatersrand, and some campuses of Vista University.

The amalgamation is meant to redress the imbalances created in the education system of South Africa under the apartheid government, which saw mostly white students enjoy a high standard of tertiary education, while non-white students did not enjoy the same privileges or levels of government funding.

The new institution is one of the largest contact universities in South Africa, with nine faculties spread over seven different campuses in the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Area - including the former Vista University campuses of Soweto and the East Rand.

The South African National Council on Higher Education has sought to allay fears that university mergers in South Africa will equate to a drop in the standard of education. Assurances were given by Professor Kader Asmal, Minister of Education at the time of the mergers, that education standards would not drop. It is generally believed that the standard of tertiary education in South Africa is very high: a factor that has contributed significantly to the brain drain of recent years.
