The University of Lagos (also known as Unilag) is one of Nigeria's premier universities. It is one of twenty-five federal universities, which are overseen and accredited by the National Universities Commission.
The University is situated in the heart of Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria, and has so far graduated more than 77,000 students since 1962 when it was founded with only 130 students and 30 staff members. Currently, the university has student population of more than 35,000 and a staff about 4,300 faculty and staff.
It offers degrees in the following Faculties/Colleges: Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Business Administration, College of Medicine, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Social Sciences and the School of Postgraduate Studies.
The University has residential and sports facilities for Staff and Students on Campus, as well as a Botanical and Zoological Garden.
Students of the University are referred to as 'Great Akokites' owing to the location of the University's main campus being in Akoka, Lagos. The Main Student halls of Residence are for Females - Moremi, Madam Tinubu Hall-MTH, Amina, all named after historical Nigerian figures and Male - Jaja, Fagunwa, Mariere, Eni Njoku, Shodeinde, Makama Bida, Henry Carr, El-Kanemi and Newest Hall II. The University of Lagos once had outreach programs in foreign countries including South Korea and South America.
There is a long standing rivalry between the Universities of Lagos, Ife and Ibadan due to their proximity and position in Academic history (they were the first three universities established in Nigeria). Long reputed for its Business, Law, Medical and outstanding engineering programs amongst its professors the University of Lagos faculty is manned by the likes of Professor VOS Olunloyo a National Merit Award Winner and a professor of Engineering. The University of Lagos has one of the most reliable academic calendar of all Nigerian Public Universities. The current Vice Chancellor is Professor Ibidapo Obe a professor of Civil Engineering and the pro chancellor is Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) one of the top lawyers and in fact the President's personal counsel and proponent of university autonomy.
