The University of Rostock (German: Universität Rostock) is a university in northern Germany, located in the city of Rostock in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is the oldest university in Northern continental Europe.
Organisation
It is divided into the following eight faculties:
- evangelical theology
- philosophy (and arts)
- natural sciences and mathematics
- jurisprudence
- engineering
- agriculture and environmental studies
- medicine
- state/political and social sciences
History
It was founded in 1419 by confirmation of pope Martin V. and thus is the oldest university in Northern continental Europe.
Over the centuries numerous of notable students and professors have had ties with the university, such as the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, the archeologist Heinrich Schliemann, or the philosopher Moritz Schlick.
The University of Rostock is one of two universities in German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the other being the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald.
