University of Toronto at Scarborough

Encyclopedia : U : UN : UNI : University of Toronto at Scarborough

The University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) is a campus of the University of Toronto, with an enrollment of nearly 10,000 full-time and 800 part-time students. It opened in 1964 as Scarborough College, and it is located in the city of Scarborough.

UTSC is University of Toronto's one of two campuses that offers a bachelor's degree in business administration (B.B.A.). The other is the Mississauga (Erindale) Campus, though that B.B.A. program has no co-op option. UTSC offers joint programs with Centennial College in journalism, new media, and paramedicine. One of UTSC's major attractions is its extensive co-op program, which places students in workplaces pertaining to their field of study, such as international development and management. UTSC is the only division of the University of Toronto to offer co-op programs, all of which include up to a year of work experience as part of the degree. The majority of degrees at UTSC are specialist degrees, as opposed to majors and minors at other campuses.

Campus

The UTSC campus is dominated by three main structures, which are all inter-connected. They are called the Humanities Wing, the Science Wing and the Bladen Wing, though in reality classes are not truly segregated so much. This will change further as the university continues its expansion program; the Academic Resource Centre as well as new residence, Joan Foley Hall opened in 2003, and the Student Centre and a building dedicated to the Management Program opened in 2004. The newest building on the campus, the Arts & Administrative building, opened on October 7, 2005, which now also functions as the main welcome area to the campus. A number of other additions and upgrades were recently completed, such as a new gallery, updated athletic facilities including a new cardio room, new LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Queer) lounge and numerous other study spaces and lecture halls.

As part of its partnership with Centennial College, there is also another, adjacent building nearby called the Centennial HP Science & Technology Centre which opened in the fall of 2004.

An extension to the Science building, with a new Soil Erosion Lab, is currently being constructed and is expected to open in 2008.

The campus spans 300 acres (1.2 km²) of woodlands, trails, and fields, and is on the Highland Creek ravine.

Student life

Unlike the downtown campus of University of Toronto, this campus is not located in a business centre. Therefore, there is not much opportunity for recreation and entertainment immediately surrounding the campus. Campus organizations host occasional events, and students have the opportunity to get involved in co-curricular activities on campus.

Full-time UTSC students are required to pay fees supporting various on campus organizations. One of the largest, the Scarborough Campus Students' Union (SCSU), organizes many campus events including first year orientation and Mosaic multicultural. The student centre and Bluff's restaurant are also owned and operated by the SCSU.

Other campus organizations supported by the fees include: the Scarborough Campus Athletic Association (SCAA), the student newspaper The Underground, the Student Residence Council (Residence Students only) and Fusion Radio. This latter organization hosts many events on campus including various shows and broadcasts. There are approximately 100 student groups and clubs representing various interests, religions or groups.

As with the larger downtown campus, UTSC student life is less focused on campus as the majority of students live within the Greater Toronto Area and not in residence.

Public transportation to UTSC is provided by the Toronto Transit Commission and the GO Transit public transportation systems. Express busses are provided by the Toronto Transit Commission for faster transportation.
