Unwritten Law

Encyclopedia : U : UN : UNW : Unwritten Law

Unwritten Law is a U.S. punk rock band that started in 1990.

They broke out in 1999 for their best known singles "Cailin'" and "Seein' Red" in 2002 and have recently released a new single "Save Me" in December 2004 which appears on their latest album Here's to the Mourning.

Biography

Growing up in the small city of Poway, California (located just north of San Diego, California), and home to fellow bands such as Blink 182 and Agent 51, Unwritten Law has a distinctive power punk sound. The band features three guitar players, including Scott Russo, their chief songwriter and lead vocalist.

The group grew up in the same rock scene that produced longtime friends blink-182 (the song "Josie" off of Blink's Dude Ranch album includes the lyrics "And my girlfriend likes U.L..."; Russo also provided back up vocals on the song). Unwritten Law's Elva was the #1 selling rock album in Australia in 2003 and they have toured extensively there, as well as touring all over the U.S. since the mid-1990s.

In 2004, the last original member of the band, Wade Youman was kicked out for ongoing disputes with Russo over a woman and money. Considered an underrated drummer by some, Youman faded out of sight and made way for a tandem of drummers for the band's new album, Here's to the Mourning released February 1, 2005. Adrian Young of the popular band No Doubt and Tony Palermo of Pulley were the two drummers involved with the album. Palermo would end up joining Unwritten Law.

In March of 2005 guitarist Rob Brewer was kicked out due to "a number of volatile circumstances involving disputes between Rob and various band members, as well as interaction between Brewer and the fans". The catalyst came on March 23, 2005 at The House of Blues in Anaheim, California. Staments made by the band on their MySpace.com page accused Brewer of failing to know his parts for the song F.I.G.H.T, which led to an incident on stage where Rob punched singer Scott Russo in the face knocking out his front tooth. According to the band, Rob later chased Scott with a vodka bottle which he swung and broke on a door frame, severing half of his pinky. The statement also says that Rob "insulted the entire band, our families, and assaulted an innocent fan backstage who was waiting to meet us."

The band continued on their tour for "Here's to the Mourning" as a 4 piece, stating "Rob is irreplaceable, and therefore we will not be accepting any applications for a new guitar player. We will, however, continue to play our hearts out every single night for our fans."
