Encyclopedia : U : UO : UOZ : Uozu, Toyama

Uozu (魚津市; -shi) is a city located in Toyama, Japan.

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 46,457 and the density of 231.59 persons per km². The total area is 200.60 km².

In the winter, a kind of mirage known as fata morgana is sometimes visible in Toyama Bay (part of the Sea of Japan). The cold temperature of the snow filled ocean, compared to the relatively warmer air above distorts the travel of light allowing one to see images of trees shimmering over the water.

The city was founded on April 1, 1952.
