Upper-Egyptian

Encyclopedia : U : UP : UPP : Upper-Egyptian

An Upper-Egyptian (Sa`idy, Arabic "صعيدي"), is a person from Upper-Egypt (Sa`id, Arabic "صعيد"). The etymology derives from "plain", having a sense of ascending. The terminal "-y" denotes the adjective.

Normally, the Upper-Egypt is less developed. It had more christian missionary activities in 19th and early 20th centuries.

More violence incidents against Copts take place in small towns of Upper-Egypt than in other parts of the country.

Unfortunately, Upper-Egyptians are victims of jokes in Egypt. Currently, this is rejected by the Code of Conduct in the Egyptian Media.

Sa`idy (Sahidic) refers also to a Coptic language dialect.
