History

The Lower Aulaqi sultans separated from the Upper Aulaqi in the 18th century. In the late 19th century, the area came under British influence and eventually became a constituent of the Aden Protectorate. The Upper Aulaqi Sultanate joined the Federation of South Arabia in June 1964. The last sultan, Awad ibn Salih Al Awlaqi, was deposed and the state was abolished in 1967 upon the founding of the People's Republic of South Yemen and the area is now part of the Republic of Yemen.
