Upperthong
Encyclopedia : U : UP : UPP : Upperthong
Upperthong is a village outside the town of Holmfirth in West Yorkshire.
Upperthong is the final resting place of Bill Owen the much loved actor who starred in the BBC Comedy Last of the Summer Wine. Bill lies at rest in St John's Parish Church.
Despite its apparently amusing name, the word Upperthong is derived from the Danish 'Thing' (a place of military gathering) - there is also a Netherthong.
