Urbana, Maryland
Encyclopedia : U : UR : URB : Urbana, Maryland
Urbana is an unincorporated community located in southern Frederick County, Maryland. It lies at the I-270/MD Rt. 80 interchange, about 7.5 miles from Frederick.
Growth
The original Urbana community has been somewhat overshadowed by new developments, the Villages of Urbana and the Urbana Highlands. These developments (begun in 1999) have swelled Urbana's population and put strain on the community, especially the school system.Overcrowding at Urbana Elementary was relieved by the opening of Centerville. Unfortunately, since a group of UES-districted parents lobbied hard to go to the new school, Centerville will open well over capacity this school year, though UES will open well below. THis imbalance will eventually harm already sinking housing prices as the portables start piling up at the allegdly state of the art new school. FCPS needs to redistribute these kids!
