Ursicinus (Roman General)

Encyclopedia : U : UR : URS : Ursicinus (Roman General)

The Roman General Ursicinus was the master of cavalry (magister equitum) in the near-East c.349-359 (Wallace-Hadrill 1986: 486). In 353 Ammianus Marcellinus was attached to the command of Ursicinus at his headquarters in Nisibis (A.M. 14.9.1, 3; Thompson 1969: 3). He was recalled from Nisibis in 354 by the Caesar Gallus to take part in the investigation of treason in Antioch (Matthews 1989: 34). Ursicinus was dismissed after the destruction of Amida (Diyarbakır in modern-Turkey) in 359 (Trombley 1999: 20), for which he was officially blamed (A.M. 20.2.2-5; Barnes 1998: 63).

The Roman historian, Ammianus Marcellinus, revered Ursicinus and his account is greatly biased towards him.
