Uttara (Mahabharata)

Encyclopedia : U : UT : UTT : Uttara (Mahabharata)

Uttara is the name of two siblings in the Hindu epic Mahabharata, the son and daughter of King Virata, at whose court the Pandavas spent a year in concealment during their exile.

Uttara, the prince, went into battle with Arjuna, disguised as his charioteer. He was killed by Bhishma in the Kurukshetra war.

Uttarā, the princess, married Arjuna's son Abhimanyu. She was widowed at a very young age when Abhimanyu was killed in the Kurukshetra war. Her son, Parikshita, was the sole surviving dynast of the Kuru clan and eventually became king of Hastinapura.
