VRAK.TV

Encyclopedia : V : VR : VRA : VRAK.TV

VRAK.TV is a Canadian French language cable television specialty channel aimed at youth audiences aged 2 to 16. It first went to air in 2001, succeeding Le Canal Famille which itself replaced TVJQ in 1988. The channel airs animated series and teenage sitcoms as well as light dramas; it has been referred to as the French Language version of YTV. The channel is owned by Astral Media.

VRAK.TV carries no commercials, though its programs still have commercial breaks, featuring promos, interstitials, and public service announcements; this is due to Quebec provincial law that prohibits commercials during children's programming. VRAK.TV does frequently join forces with various companies (mainly grocery products) to present special promotions related to its programming.

Unlike most other specialty channels, VRAK.TV is only on the air daily from 6AM to 12 Midnight. When the station was Canal Famille, the station would close down at 7PM, sharing time with a scrambled Super Écran channel (also owned by Astral). In 2001, when the channel was revamped as VRAK.TV, its hours were increased to 10PM (Super Écran followed on most systems). VRAK.TV's current closedown time, at 12 Midnight, went into effect in mid-2005.
