Vaati

or The Wind Mage is a major antagonist from the Legend of Zelda series. His most common appearance is a black orb with a single eye, although his original appearance was that of a purple Minish creature. He is the second-most recurring villain in the series, after Ganon.
History
In , Vaati appears as a young sorcerer with powerful magic, who one day unleashes monsters upon Hyrule and turns Princess Zelda to stone. He appears several times throughout the game to taunt the hero Link, and is usually accompanied by his dedicated sound effect, a high-pitched laugh. Later in the game, it is revealed that Vaati was once a Minish who became corrupted by the evil that lay in the hearts of men, and who used the Minish's Cap (a creation of his master, Ezlo) to transform himself into a human sorceror. Vaati wanted ultimate power, and sought to obtain the mystical Light Force; a source of limitless magical power contained within Hyrule's princess. When he finally learnt of its location he took the princess to Hyrule Castle to complete his plan. There, Vaati managed to steal most of the Light Force from Princess Zelda, using it to transform himself into a god-like being in order to combat Link. He was defeated and, in a desperate attempt to survive, took the form of the one-eyed creature he is most commonly seen as today. However, despite his newfound power, Vaati was defeated by Link and was later sealed within the reforged Picori Blade, which came to be known as the Four Sword (due to its ability to split its wielder into four separate beings) sometime in-between The Minish Cap and Four Swords.
Vaati also appeared in . In the beginning of the game, Princess Zelda sensed the weakening of the seal and asked Link to accompany her in repairing it. Vaati broke free at this point and kidnapped her. Link drew the Four Sword and eventually sealed Vaati in it, rescuing Zelda.
In ', Ganon used the Dark Mirror to create a shadow of Link to abduct Princess Zelda and the other shrine maidens for him so that he may siphon their power in order to take over the world, as well as destroying the hero's reputation. Ganon also commanded Shadow Link to get Link to release Vaati so that he may serve as a distraction while Ganon completed his plan. Shadow Link ambushed the shrine maidens during their checkup on the Four Sword and sealed them all within crystals, which he took, similar to events in '. He then tricked Link, who was accompanying the maidens, into drawing the Four Sword and releasing Vaati. It is revealed only at the very end of that Vaati was being manipulated by a greater evil. Before facing Ganon, Link fought and defeated Vaati once more and he disappeared like he did in The Minish Cap. What truly happened to him remains a mystery. Ganon on the other hand was ultimately sealed in the Four Sword by Link, Zelda and the Maidens.
Also, it should be noted that the Link and Zelda in The Minish Cap and the characters of the same name in both Four Swords games are different people. This follows the series tradition of the names of the hero and the princess always being the same (Link and Zelda respectively).
