Valamer

Encyclopedia : V : VA : VAL : Valamer

Valamer (c420 - c465 AD) Ostrogothic king c447 - c465 AD.

He was the son of Vandalarius and cousin to king Thorismud. A vassal under the overlordship of the Huns, Valamer helped Attila raid the provinces of the Danube (447 AD), and commanded the Ostrogothic contingent of Attila's force at the battle of the Catalanian Plains. With Attila's death (453 AD), Valamer became the leader of the Goths settled in Pannonia. He defeated and routed the sons of Attila in 456-457 AD.

A dispute concerning annual tribute caused Valamer to lead the Goths against the Romans at Constantinople from 459 - 462 AD, when the emperor Leo I agreed to pay the Goths a gold subsidy annually. During a Scirian raid, Valamer was thrown from his horse and killed.
