Vanguard High School is one of seven High Schools in Marion County, Florida. The school serves the northeast area of Ocala, Florida. Vanguard offers the International Baccalaureate program for students, which accepts pupils from outside districts and makes up about 25% of the student population. Vanguard's mascot is a Knight and the school colors are red, white, and blue. One notable alumnus is NFL football player Daunte Culpepper. The Vanguard Knight's cross-town rivals are the Forest High School Wildcats.

The current student population is 1796 students. 441 of these students are in the IB program.

Renovation

Renovations to the school are planned, with groundbreaking expected to take place during the Summer of 2006. The project will help beautify the school, while accomodating more students with new classrooms. Because of the sound structural integrity of the current school facilities, notably the 'Round Building', these existing buildings will not change much, as far as their general design goes. Among the new additions planned is a new cafeteria. The existing lunch room will most likely be turned into an auditorium, of some sort.

With the new construction comes preparations. Everything will need to be removed from the classrooms, as the buildings will be stripped down to their shell. The construction is set to start during the summer, as its initiation will not obstruct teaching.

Integration

Vanguard was the first integrated school in Marion County. Since its beginnings, Vanguard High School has been a melting pot, with students from many different races working together. No problems arose when this policy was made, despite the issues suffered elsewhere by integration.
