Veolia Verkehr GmbH is the largest private operator of passenger buses and trains in Germany. Since April 3 2006 Connex Verkehr GmbH was renamed to Veolia Verkehr GmbH, but the sister companys keep their current names.

In Germany, Veolia, former Connex, named each Company with regional names. Most companys operate rather small and regional train and bus services.

Short-distance trains

Since April 4, 2005, Connex’s German operations have been structured in four Regions.

North

Region North include the federal States (Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein). In this Region the Niebüller Verkehrsbetriebe GmbH (NVB) and the Nord-Ostsee-Bahn GmbH (NOB) operate. The Niebüller Verkehrsbetriebe is a buscompany operating ten buslines with a length of about 527,382 km. It has nineteen employees and transports each year about 680.000 people. It is mostly shared by the Nord-Ostsee-Bahn, which also operates since December 12 2005 a 237 km long railway service between Sylt and Hamburg. Translated it means North-Balticsee-Railway. It is the first private train driving a that long distance. The Nord-Ostsee-Bahn also operates the routes Kiel - Husum, Husum - Sankt Peter-Ording, Kiel - Neumünster together with the Deutsche Bahn, Niebüll - Tonder and the busline Brunsbüttel - Glückstadt. They have over 250 employees, drive about 7,1 million km per year, got 7 million passengers each year and operate on a 431 km long railway network.

It is planned to extend these trains vom Hamburg on to Berlin and Cologne unter the Operation of the "Ostseeland Verkehrs Gmbh" or short "OLA", who runs all Veolia-long-distance trains in Germany. Unlike the trains between Sylt and Hamburg, the trains from Hamburg to Berlin and Cologne are not subsidised by any State of Germany

East

Long-distance trains

Veolia runs 3 long distance trains:

InterConnex 1

Since December 2001 the Ostseeland Verkehr GmbH runs a long distance train with German diesel multiple units class Talent (train) between Rostock - Berlin - Leipzig - Gera. These Trains were constructet for regional use so that longer distance were quite unpleasing. Only later they became comfortable long distance seats. From the beginning on they had a BoardBistro. This Train was concepted as a compensation for the cancelled trains between Rostock and Leipzig by the Deutsche Bahn.

The trains were diveded into three classed: Traveller, Economy and Business. Each of them with different kind of service.

From May 2006 the train service was shortened to Leipzig - Berlin, driving Monday to Friday two times in each direction. Saturday the train drives from Leipzig to Rostock via Berlin and Sunday back. The train units have changed into a locomotive of the Nord-Ostsee-Bahn and coaches of the former InterConnex 3. Between Gera and Leipzig drives a Shuttle Train with a diesel multiple Unit Class Desiro. Also the ticket system was simplified and the three classes were abandoned.

Ostseeland Express

Since December 2004 a second line from Zittau via Berlin to Stralsund, in the summer season even to Rügen began to operate unter the Name InterConnex 2. This line was extended in the summer 2004 to Liberec in the Czech Republic. Shuttle-busses from Dresden and Usedom were also operating. With the timetablechange in December 2004 the route was changed and goes now between Stralsund, Berlin and Dresden and since December 2005 it was renamed to Ostseeland Express short OLX.

Harz-Berlin-Express

From December 2005 on, the Veoloa sub-company HarzElbeExpress short HEX startet to operate the Harz-Berlin-Express from Berlin via Magdeburg, Halberstadt to Thale in the Harz on weekends. This route was previously operated by the Deutsche Bahn.

InterConnex 3

A third line between Rostock and Cologne drove between 6. June and 27. October 2003.

Plannings

Two new lines are planned between Hamburg and Colonge, as well as Hamburg and Berlin as an extension of the regional trains between Sylt and Hamburg from December 2006 on. All long-distance trains run under the name InterConnex.

Goods trains

Cargo trains are operated under the name Connex Cargo Logistics GmbH.
