Via Media USA
Encyclopedia : V : VI : VIA : Via Media USA
Via Media USA is an alliance of moderate-to-liberal interest groups in mainly conservative dioceses in the Episcopal Church in the United States of America. These groups formed in opposition to actions taken, or at least anticipated, by their local bishops. In March of 2004 representatives from the several of these groups, a few of which were already using the name via media, met in Atlanta to formally establish Via Media USA. Unlike the right-wing American Anglican Council, to which it is sometimes compared, Via Media USA has little in the way of financial resources or staff and is essentially a coalition of groups operating on their own. Its current Facilitator is Christopher Wilkins, a member of Progressive Episcopalians of Pittsburgh.
In general the groups supported the consecration of Gene Robinson and the blessing of same sex unions. At the Atlanta meeting, Via Media USA adopted a mission statement that (among other things) affirmed the Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral.
Via Media USA has had to go [out of its way] to explain that it is not affiliated with the Every Voice Network.
