Vicar Apostolic of the Lancashire District

This ecclesiastical jurisdiction, of the Catholic Church in England, was a passing stage in the establishment of Catholic dioceses in England as the Catholics emerged from the centuries of government persecution. The title was held from June 5, 1840 by Bishop George Hilary Brown, but lapsed on September 29, 1850 when Brown was appointed to the post of Bishop of Liverpool, created that same day by the Pope Pius IX with the Bull Universalis Ecclesiae, along with twelve other dioceses in England and Wales. This title was changed to that of Archbishop of Liverpool when Liverpool became a Metropolitan See under Pope St Pius X, on October 28, 1911.
