His surname is derived from the forename of Krum, a successful khan that ruled Bulgaria in the 9th century, although it being a surname suggest the -ov family suffix, and its absence makes the name look odd or unnatural to a Bulgarian. There are rumors[[Citing sources citation needed]] that the character is based on a real person, although no one knows who he is. A Viktor Krum never showed up for the auditions in Bulgaria, further deepening the mystery.
Krum is a Seeker for the Bulgarian Quidditch team. He is considered a genius by many, having entered the International Quidditch League while still being a youth attending wizarding school at Durmstrang. Despite his success and fame, or maybe because of it, Krum appears to be unhappy and lonely, and is further characterized as being very quiet and reserved, though Hermione says he's a genuinely nice person beneath the sullen exterior.
Krum and some of his fellow students travel to Hogwarts to enter themselves as candidates in the Triwizard Tournament. Krum becomes the Durmstrang champion. He is often viewed both with suspicion, due to Durmstrang's reputation for teaching the Dark Arts, as well as with admiration for his feats (mostly from giggling Hogwarts girls).
In the movie, Rita Skeeter refers to him as the "Bulgarian Bon-Bon";
Victor means winner or conqueror, in Latin; it is a common name in Russia and other Slavic nations (including Bulgaria).
Krum's wand is made of hornbeam and has a dragon heartstring core. It is ten and a quarter inches long. Mr. Ollivander pronounces it 'a Gregorovitch creation,' and 'rather thicker than one usually sees . . . quite rigid'.
In the Quidditch World Cup title game between Bulgaria and Ireland, he catches the snitch, ending the game while Ireland wins the cup.
Whilst competing the Triwizard Tournament, he finds himself falling for studious Hermione Granger. He takes to visiting the Hogwarts library frequently to watch her. Hermione later reveals that he told her "...he'd been coming up to the library every day to try and talk to me, but he hadn't been able to pluck up the courage!" In the Second Task, Krum has to retrieve Hermione, chosen as the most valuable person to him. Krum's relationship with Hermione, and taking her to the Yule Ball, provokes jealousy from Ron Weasley, who had ironically been a fan of Krum.
Rita Skeeter, looking for revenge on Hermione, makes up a story for Witch Weekly, claiming she was toying with both Krum and Harry's affections. Harry became sick of telling people that Hermione wasn't his girlfriend and, when questioned, he told Krum that "We're friends. She's not my girlfriend and she never has been. It's just that Skeeter woman making things up."
At the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire he returns to Durmstrang on their ship which rises out of the lake beside Hogwarts. He does not make appearance in the fifth book, but Hermione writes at least one long letter to him that year, showing that they maintain contact. Contrary to his invitation, however, Hermione does not end up visiting him in Bulgaria.
It was once believed that Hermione and Krum would kiss in the film version of the fourth book. No kiss between the two is ever shown in the film or the book, but Ginny Weasley mentions in passing in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince that they had kissed, allegedly in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Subsequently, Ron asks Harry if Hermione had ever kissed Krum. Harry believes she had but did not want to tell Ron who nonetheless "gather[ed] the worst from the look on Harry's face."
We also meet, briefly, Viktor Krum's parents in the chapter "The Third Task" in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He seems to have inherited his mother's dark hair, and his father's large nose.
J. K. Rowling has stated that Krum will make an appearance in Book 7.
