Vladimir Nazor

Vladimir Nazor (born 1876 in Postira, Brač – died 1949 in Zagreb) was a Croatian writer and translator.

Nazor acquired much literary popularity in Croatia writing about folk legends and stories. One of his main works is the extensive novel Pastir Loda ("Loda the Shepherd"). The work describes the history of his native island of Brač as told by Loda, a faun, and one of the last of its kind on the island. The tale Veli Jože is also popular: it features a helpful and good-natured giant named Jože, living in the area around the town of Motovun (Inner Istria).

During World War II, Nazor joined the Partisans and became a close associate of Josip Broz Tito's. After the war, he became the first president of the People's Republic of Croatia's Parliament in the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia.
