Vodka Oso Negro

Encyclopedia : V : VO : VOD : Vodka Oso Negro

Oso Negro (Spanish: "Black Bear") is a brand of vodka brewed and bottled in Mexico. This liquor is bottled in one liter and 750 milliliter presentations. The alcoholic concentration is 40%. In Mexico, vodka is commonly mixed with other beverages or fruit juices such as orange, pineapple, lemon or tomato, creating beverages including the "Screwdriver" with orange juice, the "Bloody Mary" with tomato and lemon and the "Piña Colada" with pineapple.

Past advertising campaigns promoted Vodka Oso Negro as "You can recognize Vodka Oso Negro because of the image of the black bear on the label".

There is a common saying in Mexico among the female (but also among male) population linked with this advertising campaign. As explanation is important to remark that the Mexican population is a mixed race between the ancient indigenous Mexican races (such Aztecs, Olmecs, Toltecs, Zapotecs, etc.) and the Spaniards. This is the reason of the hair color of the Mexican people, the majority have black hair (a color like a raven´s wing) or similar tones and a natural blond is not very common.

So the saying is related with the habit of certain female groups to dye their hair blond. The popular saying is "If you as a Mexican woman dyes your hair as a blond, then you are a vodka Oso Negro blond" Why? Because as an artificial blond you have blond hair at the top, but downstairs you will still having a black bear on the label!
