Volkswagen Touran

Encyclopedia : V : VO : VOL : Volkswagen Touran

The Volkswagen Touran is a compact MPV based on a vertically stretched 5th generation of the Volkswagen Golf and sold in Europe and some other selected markets. It was launched in 2003 to fill a perceived gap in Volkswagen's model lineup below their large MPV, the Sharan. The car is delivered in a 2 (area-dependent), 5 or 7 seat version. It can be considered as an extended version of the Golf Plus, since their front-end are similar in size, and the Touran is 20cm longer (and therefore a seven-seater, while the Golf Plus is a five-seater). In some areas, like Japan, the car is called Golf Touran.

The name 'Touran' derives from the Persian word Turan, referring to an area in central Asia, north of Iran.

Engines

The Touran is available with both gasoline (petrol) , diesel and liquid gas (lpg) - powered engines. The engines are super units.

Miles per gallon (mpg)

The diesel model of the Volkswagen Touran gets a significantly higher reading for miles per gallon, shown on the vehicle's multi-functional display during operation. In a warm climate and with appropriate driving with coasting and high gears, it is possible to achieve 60mpg in a diesel Touran. However 40mpg is a more Realistic.

A petrol model has a lower reading.

Touran HyMotion & Hybrid

The Touran HyMotion is Volkswagen's Hydrogen Development concept. It has a nickel-metal hybrid battery which produces 80kW, it does the 0-100 km/h (0-62mph) sprint in a time of 14 seconds and has a Top Speed of 140km/h.

In 2008 Shanghai-Volkswagen with Tongji University will release a Touran Hybrid as part of the lead up to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

A prototype of the Touran Hybrid was shown with power outputs from a 20kW electric motor in conjunction with a 110kW petrol engine, the transmission is most likely to be Volkswagen's DSG dual clutch automatic gearbox.

Commercial version

The Touran's basic design was used in the base model for the new generation of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (Caddy).
