Vyshny Volochyok

Vyshny Volochyok (Russian: ) is a town in Tver Oblast of Russia. The settlement is known since 1471. A highway and a railway connecting Moscow and Saint Petersburg pass through the town. Geographical coordinates: . Population: 56,405 (2002 Census).
The town is located 119 km north-west of Tver, in the Valdai Hills, between the Tvertsa and Tsna rivers, on the watershed between the basins of the Volga and the Baltic Sea. Hence the town's name is translated from Russian as "Upper Portage". In 1703-1722 Peter the Great had a canal constructed to link these two rivers (see Mariinsk Canal System). Later, Vyshny Volochok became a major centre of textile manufacture.
