WCHS-TV

Encyclopedia : W : WC : WCH : WCHS-TV

WCHS-TV is the ABC affiliate for Charleston and Huntington, West Virginia, the second-largest market (in terms of area) east of the Mississippi River. It is licensed to Charleston and serves 61 counties in central West Virginia, eastern Kentucky and southern Ohio. Its transmitter is located in St. Albans, West Virginia.

The station is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, and shares its news operations with FOX affiliate WVAH.

WCHS was founded in 1954, co-owned with WCHS-AM radio (which is now under separate ownership). It was actually the second television station in Charleston. WKNA-TV had signed on UHF channel 49 as an ABC affiliate in 1953, but went dark in 1955 due to lack of viewership. WCHS-TV joined ABC in 1958, switching affiliations with WHTN-TV, channel 13 in Huntington. It reversed the swap and went back to CBS in 1962.

In 1986, WOWK-TV dropped ABC for CBS, and on June 1, the two stations swapped affiliations again.

One of the first televised presidential debates featuring John F. Kennedy took place at WCHS' studios in Charleston. The nationally syndicated Produce Corner segments were taped at WCHS as well.

Problems with Suddenlink

When the deal with Suddenlink Communications purchasing cable systems from Charter Communications came to a close on July 1st. Sinclair is wanting a $40 million on time fee and $1 per subscriber per month from Suddenlink for rights to carry WCHS and WVAH on local cable systems.[link] The channels have been pulled from the Becky area by Sinclair and subscribers in that area are reciving ABC programming from that local affiliate and are recieving Fox programming through Foxnet.[link] The FCC ruled that the stations could not be pulled during a major sweeps period and must remain on all Suddenlink cable systems until July 26.
