Encyclopedia : W : WF : WFN : WFNP-FM
WFNP-FM is a college radio station licensed to Rosendale, New York run by students attending the State University of New York at New Paltz, broadcasting on 88.7 MHz at 6 kilowatts ERP from the Illinois Mountain tower in Marlborough, New York.
WFNP-FM is one of a handful of time-share FM stations remaining in the United States, since its 1990 signon it has shared the 88.7 frequency with WRHV-FM (originally WMHX-FM), a simulcast of classical-formatted WMHT-FM Schenectady. Currently, WFNP-FM is on the air from 7:00 PM-5:00 AM weeknights and 10:00 PM-5:00 AM weekends while school is in session (September 1st to November 30th and February 1st until April 30th). Since the mid 1990s, WFNP-FM has looked to find its own frequency and currently possesses a construction permit to move to 98.9 MHz and to expand to 24/7 programming.
Prior to WFNP-FM's signon, it's programming was heard exclusively on campus via an AM carrier current station; this station evolved to its own daytime programming and an FM simulcast by night. The carrier current station lasted until the early 2000s when it was succeeded by a simulcast on the campus cable system and a webcast.
