WGBC

Encyclopedia : W : WG : WGB : WGBC

WGBC is the NBC affiliate for Meridian, Mississippi. The station signed on the air originally as WLBM in the early 1960s. WLBM was a semi-satellite of nearby WLBT, Jackson's NBC affillate.

WLBM's studios caught fire in 1991, knocking the station off the air and leaving much of eastern Mississippi without an over-the-air NBC affiliate. Comcast provided NBC programming from Hattiesburg's WDAM for cable subscribers. NBC returned to the market when Global Communications brought the station back on the air as WGBC in 1993. Its transmitter is located in Meridian.

Newscasts

WGBC aired news programs Monday through Friday as "WGBC News 30". However, those broadcasts ended due to low ratings. After Global Communications entered into a local marketing agreement with WMDN, local news returned to WGBC as part of "24/30 News" since the broadcast originated from WMDN's studios. By 1998, WGBC was left without a newscast when "24/30 News" was rebranded "WMDN News" and aired exclusively on WMDN.

Programming

In addition to NBC network programming, WGBC airs a variety of syndicated programming including Maury, Inside Edition, and syndicated comedies including My Wife and Kids and Girlfriends. Weekend syndicated programming includes Stargate SG-1, and reruns of Smallville and [[Star Trek: Enterprise]].
