WHHL, HOT 104.1, is a Rhythmic Top 40 station serving the St. Louis area. The Radio One owned outlet broadcasts at 104.1 MHz with an ERP of 39 kw and is licensed to Jerseyville, Illinois. It was acquired from Emmis Communications and on October 1, 2005 placed its current format there. Its transmitter is located in Florissant, Missouri.
History
The station began targeting St. Louis in 1983 as Country music station WKKX-FM (Kix-104). However in 1994 they would switch frequencies with WKBQ and its Top 40 format(from 106.5).By 1997 the Top 40 format was dropped for Adult Top 40 as "Alice 104.1". The next year, that was gone and replaced by an extreme rock-music sound of WXTM-FM. But by 2000 that format would replaced with an All-80s and 90s format called "The Mall" (WMLL-FM). That too would also go away by 2004.
After "The Mall" closed down, it was reopened as WRDA, "Red @ 104.1", an Adult Standards station that specialized in Swing, Jazz, and "Music with Class" as they called it. Many St. Louisans enjoyed Red, but Emmis Communications sold it to Radio One, for $20 million. Radio One would later change the call letters to WHHL (Where Hip Hop Lives) to match the "Hot 104.1" handle. They would take possession of the station in 2006 after running it under a LMA (Local Marketing agreement).
Although their music favors R&B/Hip-Hop, Radio One chose to make WHHL a Rhythmic Top 40, which they are using to challenge Clear Channel Communications' Rhythmic-leaning Top 40 Mainstream rival KSLZ and its Urban contemporary sister KATZ-FM. The reason for that was it wanted to attract a more broad-based audience(regardless of race) and that its last attempt to try a Urban format (on WFUN) could not top KATZ-FM.
Radio One now owns two stations in St. Louis: WHHL-FM and WFUN-FM (Urban AC format Foxy 95.5)
