History
WHUD signed on in 1958 playing "Beautiful Music", which was a format playing pop songs covered by soft instrumental musicians. These artists included Percy Faith, Lawrence Welk, John Fox, Chet Atkins,Mantovani, Henry Mancini, Hollyridge Strings, Richard Clayderman, David Rose, and many others. Mixed in a couple times an hour would be soft vocalists like Frank Sinatra, The Lettermen, Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, and others.
By the 1970's, soft Adult Contemporary artists were also mixed in such as The Carpenters, soft Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand, soft Abba, Kenny Rogers, and others. About one vocal per quarter hour would be heard.
By the late 1980's, softer songs by artists like Billy Joel, Commodores, Chicago, Whitney Houston, The Beatles, James Taylor, and others would be mixed in.
In 1990 the vocal/instrumental ratio was about half and half. Later in 1990, the instrumental cover songs were quietly eliminated. At that point WHUD had high ratings, but demographics were aging to the point that the format was becoming a tough sell. WHUD quietly evolved into a Soft Adult Contemporary format as a result. By then the Frank Sinatra and Johnny Mathis type artists were nearly gone.
In the early 90's, WHUD continued to evolve to a straight adult contemporary music format. Motown, more uptempo 70's hits, and current product were gradually eased in, while the Barry Manilow type artists were gone.
In 2000 WHUD added Delila in the evenings. By then WHUD had evolved into the sound they have today. Today's core artists include Elton John, Mariah Carey, Rob Thomas, Madonna, The Eagles, LeAnn Rimes, Faith Hill, Kelly Clarkson, and others.
Randy Turner from Mix 97 joined WHUD in 2006.
